Our Focus
Lotus Outreach Australia is guided by the UN's Millennium Development Goals, a blueprint for addressing extreme poverty and its consequences, which include the commitment to promote
- universal primary education, and
- gender equality and the empowerment of women
Without education, children in developing countries are increasingly vulnerable to the scourge of trafficking and sexual exploitation. An estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked from their homes each year, 1 million of them for the voracious sex industry. Seventy percent are girls, some as young as five or six years old.
Cambodia
The situation for children is particularly acute in Cambodia, one of the world's poorest countries. After years of invasion, bombing, landmines and genocide, 40% of Cambodians now live below the poverty line, 170,000 have HIV, 12,000 die from AIDS each year. In such conditions, children are at greatest risk of abuse and exploitation.
We believe that real change takes root at the local level. Providing basic safety, healthcare and education to impoverished children will help produce successful communities. Successful and vibrant communities are more likely to secure the health and education of future generations, making the transformation from poverty to self-sufficiency sustainable and regenerative.
